JUNE 12: POLITICIANS OWE NIGERIANS A DUTY TO SUSTAIN DEMOCRACY

Twenty one years after Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, politicians and ruling class have been advised to sustain and jealously protect the present democracy in the country in the interest of human and capital development.

In his Democracy Day Statement on Friday, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the coordinator a rights’ group, The lntegrity Elite, (TIE), Mr Lanre Ogidan noted that politicians owe Nigeria masses a duty to sustain and protect the nation’s democracy for more dividends and developmental attainments.

He however, appreciated the present Federal Government led by President Mohammadu Buhari for making June 12 Democracy Day in the country.

Ogidan described June 12 as a symbol of unity and oneness, “a day when all Nigerians, without religion or ethnic bias spoke with one voice through their votes and elected late M.K.O Abiola of Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The rights’ activist, therefore urged Nigerians to join hands with government at all sphere of the economy for the necessary development the country is yearning for.

Meanwhile, TIE has also launched a campaign against rape, describing the act as evil and a calculated attack on the entire human race.

The director of media and publicity of TIE, Moses Amodu condemned the act of rape as total barbaric and wickedness to humanity.

His words; ” Women plays a fundamental role in the development and sustainability of our society and as such, any attack on them, particularly girl child, is an attack on the entire human race.

Amodu further shared his taught with the families of Jennifer, Uwa, Tina and all the victims of this dastardly agencies particularly the Inspector- General of Police to his good office to clip the perpetrators and bring them to book.
